I Was Here

Actually – it seems like you were here…

I passed some initials in a new section of concrete sidewalk this morning, and it got me thinking – everybody wants to let others know that they were here, don’t they?

Right here

And hopefully here means something…

  • It’s a special place
  • It was hard to get here
  • I was with someone special
  • At the same time as you
  • Before you
  • After you
  • Right now

And you can’t take that away from me.

And I’m special

This is perhaps implied in all of the situations, but some people believe they’re special enough that the mere fact that they’re here is notable…

(but unfortunately that is not true for most people)

Prove it

And so I might need or want to prove that I was here – to people that will be here later on, or to people that will never come here.

So I can take something, leave something, or record the event.

When you’re also here, and you see my name, you get the idea that I was here.

When I return and show you the pebble, you get the idea that I had been here.

When you watch the video on the internet, you also get the idea that I was here, and there’s no vandalism or trash involved…

Unless of course I’m faking it – and had someone else leave my name, claim some pebble from my back yard is from the beach, or use gimmickry to make the video look legit. (But we’ll leave this concept out of things for now;-)

Other legacies

You might leave behind children – you were here…

Or records that indicate you won or reached some milestone in an exceptional fashion.

And you might leave artwork that inspires others for generations.

Or a company that bears your name.

Significance vs annoyance

And I’ll grant you all rights to being here.

But if it’s all the same, being next to wet cement is not really a significant accomplishment.

Can you save it for when you really get someplace?
