Failing To Make Decisions

Especially When You Don’t Think You Have One To Make…

Did you pick which bed to fall asleep in last night?

Did you decide to brush your teeth this morning?

Did you choose which finger to use to press the mouse just a moment ago?

Or do you set things in motion and let them continue on…

Deciding once

I’m right there – if I decide that I want to wash the sheets once a week (on Mondays), I’m not very interested in reexamining this decision very often. If today is Monday, then the sheets get washed. If not, and there’s no special reason to, it doesn’t come to mind.

Habit

These are sometimes called habits – but I’m calling you out on that.

Do you think staying in a marriage is a habit?

Is mowing the lawn a habit?

If you don’t actually decide to go to work each day, is it a habit?

But you can choose differently!

And this is what I’m getting to.

If your life is about making decisions, it’s also about not making decisions.

Staying married.

Mowing the lawn when it needs it.

And going to work to support the family.

Change when necessary

And there are times when you need to readdress situations.

If the laundromat backs up for hours on Mondays, maybe Sunday might make a good alternative.

If the hedges need trimming, perhaps the lawn can wait.

And if things aren’t “good and getting better” at the ABC company, perhaps it would be better to find a job at the XYZ company…

Knowing you have a choice

Remember – the autopilot only knows how to do what it’s been told, and if you want to get to a different destination, you’re going to have to take control again and reset your direction.

So for today, perhaps it’s time to strap yourself in and take control.
