That Doesn’t Scare Me

Where do you stop?

I received a great insight from a colleague this week that was helpful enough, but I took it one step further.

Nancy Roberts writes the “Success iNsights” e-zine, which can be found over at http://insightspps.com

Her article this week was on helping people understand where they might start – to get unstuck.  Her answer is to start from where you stopped – and you stopped where you were afraid.

And while I don’t spend a lot of time on self-affirmations, this gave me a good moment to pause and think of all the places I haven’t stopped…

Circling the target

I’ve already realized that my personal style is to spiral in on my target. If you were to have full view of my activities, you’d see me approach and circle around my goal.

Sure, some things I just might go right up to, but for many others I’ll carefully take two steps forwards and one step aside.

It’s a technique that has kept me moving reasonably safely for several decades;-)

Finding out what I don’t know

If I had to give one good reason why I do that, this would be my answer.

If there’s some aspect that I’m not sure of, or even if I consider that it might be more complex than I imagined at first, I’d really like to have a better handle on what I might not know before I begin.

And rushing straight ahead doesn’t leave any time to figure things out on the way…

Success

If I haven’t stopped, and I have success, it seems reasonably clear that these things don’t scare me:

  • Writing a book (Completed one, one in progress)
  • Public speaking (A monthly event)
  • Stage performances (Several leads in musicals, dozens of shows)
  • Running my own business (Five years now)
  • Finding my way through the wilderness (With a map;-)

And those are the kind of things that can be difficult to complete – even if I’ve stalked them.

Things that go bump in the night

But that’s not to say there are no things that give me pause…

And that’s the other side of Nancy’s advice – have a look at the places you don’t want to go to get an idea of what you have to do.

Just don’t tell me there’s something I can’t do, because then I’ll just have to show you I can;-)
