Accomplishing Something New

It’s quite a feeling to realize you’ve never done this particular thing before…

And now you have.

It doesn’t have to be a huge thing – I still get a bit of a kick competing in a new type of event, playing a new game, or cooking something new (to me).

Is it so amazing because it’s the first time it’s ever been done? Probably not. But it’s still something.

Some things are old hat

Like having a beating heart, singing, and tying your shoes.

The first because it’s been doing that roughly 37 million times per year since you were born, the second because singing (even badly) is rather primal, and the last because it’s one of those early-life right-of-passage events that stays with you. (unless you get those slip-on shoes or go with velcro…)

Working with a different beat

And that’s why I think it’s kind of cool to get your heart to move differently now and then.

The medical websites tell me my “maximum heart rate” ought to be between 172 and 176. That’s the rate at which my heart just can’t go any faster.

So I took a bit of pleasure a year or so ago when the heart rate monitor I was using clocked mine at 180 bpm. My physical condition was clearly better than average – and I wasn’t dying, just running rather hard… (Full disclosure, my calculated max rate at the time was 178)

But still – that was a new experience for me.

Saturday in The Park

So yes, I sing and dance in the Traveling Cabaret – and enjoy the heck out of it.

And this summer I added the above Chicago tune to my list of potential solos. My goal in adding songs is to find ones that expand my range and capabilities – because I haven’t performed those particular songs on stage yet.

The other shoe (knot)

And then there’s the “new” to me knot I learned a few years back – quite a bit less likely to come untied. (and shoes coming untied seems to be a problem for me unless I take special precautions…)

So I learned how to tie my shoes again (better).

All the time

So yes – I’ve just looked at three ordinary events that I’ve found something new and interesting about.

My day is full of new things – and I like that.

Gives added meaning to “What’s new?”, doesn’t it?
